In solidarity with Black Lives Matter of Greater New York, members of Extinction Rebellion, Rise & Resist, and Gays Against Guns gathered at Times Square to call for the firing of Officer Daniel Pantaleo on Tuesday, June 4, 2019. Activists and eyewitnesses say Eric Garner was breaking up a fight on the day he was choked out by the officer. Since Garner’s death, Officer Pantaleo has received two pay raises. Additionally, the man who caught the incident on video, Garner’s friend Ramsey Orta, has since faced severe retaliation at the hands of prison officials. Orta has been held for two years now and kept at a total of seven different prison facilities, including Rikers Island. He has been placed in solitary confinement at least five times, and even had rat poison put into his food. He is currently being held in Collins Correctional Facility near Buffalo, New York and wrote a letter denouncing actions taken against him. Orta added, he is not suicidal. If he loses his life, he says, it will not be an accident.
